When the original 240Z came out it offered performance parallel w/ the Corvette at a much cheaper price. All the previous Z's were designed with the general consumer in mind which made it a great seller since it was so affordable. The ZX series is when they started to go astray from the original idea. Things got heavier and more expensive and finally finished with the Z32. The 350Z (notice no 'X') is just Nissan getting back to the original idea of the Z. Lightweight, good performance and, most importantly, affordable to anyone on the market for a sports car. They left the GT model frills to the G35 coupe and kept more of a pure sports car feel to the new Z.
